Do Grown-ups Fall Down?

I will never forget the day, at the age of about seven years old.  I was walking to the store to get candy.  It was a pretty day outside. All seemed to be going extremely well in my life.  It wasn't until I got down the street, around the corner, about ten steps from the door of the store when right across the street, at the community bank, a grown lady fell down.  It changed my life forever.  Before that day, I honestly thought that grown-ups didn't fall down.  I was convinced that that was simply something that happened amongst children.  I thought that grown-ups did everything right and that they watched their steps and made extremely careful decisions all day long.  I had never seen it, therefore, it was not suppose to happen.

Well, if you are a grown-up and have at some point fallen down, you might find my observation as a seven year old, quite funny.  I know, as clumsy as I am, I have plenty more falls to go.  It wasn't long before I became aware of the correlation between grown-ups falling down physically and them falling down spiritually.

Not only do grown-ups fall down, we fall all the time.  Physically, I guess we do tend to be a little more careful.  Spiritually, we often need a walking cane.  The physical stuff we tend to try to avoid because we can actually see it.  However, spiritually, we get thrown all around if we are not careful.  It wasn't until I became a Christian that this all made sense to me.

Let's take a look at when the first grown-up, fell.  Genesis 1:3-7 says,  Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

You see, Adam and Eve fell right there in the beginning of The Bible and immediately tried to cover themselves.  They realized that they had fallen and they were embarrased.  So, what do you think happened to the lady who fell in front of the bank?  I'll tell you, she wasn't hurt.  However, she was embarrassed.  The good news is, she got back up and continued on her way.

I mentioned earlier that "spiritually, we often need a walking cane". Isaiah 8:15 says, Many of them will stumble; they will fall and be broken, they will be snared and captured."  However, Jude 1:24 says,  To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy.

Jesus, became my cane that keeps me from falling and helps me to get back up when I fall.  He is also available to all who needs a cane.

So, YES! Grown-ups do fall down, but just like the lady at the bank, with Jesus, we can all get back up again.
